With a disappointing number of entries for the fours (8 at last count) what can we do to improve numbers?

Is there anything we can do? Are we just short on bowlers/clubs? Should the committee be doing more to promote the game?

What (if anything) should they be doing?

Seeing that Hertfordshire only has a small number of clubs. This means there is only ever be the small number to call on. To improve this situation I think we somehow need to raise the profile of Carpet Bowling in Hertfordshire. Awarness of this website and the ECBA website being given a wider circle outside the club members. As an example I and my son only started playing when we spotted an advert in the local church magazine asking if there was anyone interested trying out the game, we went along (actually encouraged by my son) found that we liked the game and the friendly reception so we both joined. Could this be a starting point for getting numbers up in existing clubs? A small advert in a local magazine placed by the various clubs?

My outdoor bowls club was also struggling for members. What they did to help was to have 1000 leaflets printed and share them with current members to put through letter boxes near them. They just had about 50 each so was not to much trouble for them to do. This resulted in 15 Enquirers.

Could we not do something similar, perhaps have a leaflet giving location and a phone contact for each of the our clubs. That way we could cover a lot of territory with just one leaflet. Anyone interested could then contact the nearest club

Each club would be given a quantity of leaflets to deliver to their local area as the felt fit

Both good ideas Ian, Alan. We have a committee meeting next week, I'm going to raise some of these ideas and see if the county can afford to do a little bit of local advertising for each club. Think it is important that we also do this for clubs such as Bramfield, Redbourne, Woolmer Green & Hunsdon. Where I know that they still bowl but are struggling for numbers / drivers to get back into the league.
